Awesome! I'm glad my review helped spread awareness. If horror/vampires are not your thing, keep in mind they have a purpose in 'Sinners' (and don't really appear until seemingly halfway or three-quarters into the movie). The 'gore' is minimal, especially for this genre, so don't let that scare you away. It's actually genre-defying. If you do go to see it, let me know what you think.
Yeah, if thinks of horror like the Freddy Krueger slasher "horror," then this belongs in a totally different category. Well, actually, it doesn't really fit into a specific category/genre, which is part of what makes it great.
Yeah, I agree re: the brilliance. I didn't see Creed, since I wasn't a boxing/Rocky fan, and I'd postponed Fruitvale Station because I knew it was going to be heart-breaking. But I now need to watch them. I, too, loved Black Panther. Good to know you loved Creed.
There were creepy moments--the vampires were creepy, given their fake human impersonations. So their unpredictability was suspenseful, where you are waiting for and wondering if something was going to happen. I'd say there were probably only 3-4 times where I was physically startled. I'm not sure that helps much. What's a movie that you found scary? That might help me by comparison, assuming I've seen it.
No. Definitely not nonstop gore. About ¾ or so in is where you see the vampire attacks and some shots are implied rather that shown. This movie is not about gratuitous gore and killing. There is a reason for it. It falls on the good story category to me!
I owe it to you, Rachelle, and the conversation with Nik and Doug - without your conversation I’d have never seen this movie - not one to take in vampire or horror movies of any kind. I was excited to see it playing locally, so I went to see it the very next day. Very grateful to have seen it - and I agree, genre-defying. It’s one I’ll watch again, because I’m sure there is so much to see with a second viewing. Every character was rich and real, the setting and scenes were characters themselves. I found the integration of the cultural histories of the Irish, Creole, Africans, etc., to be intriguing, especially the deep musical connections. Thank you!
Thanks, I would not have known about this film were it not for you!

This is good to know. Thanks.
Yeah ... I probably should have included that in the post. Oh well ... :-)
A fascinating review that provides thoughtful explanation for the global response to the film.
Note: Coogler and Jordan are brilliant. I loved Creed and Black Panther. But the horror label deterred me. Thank you for providing essential context.

Thanks so much for the kudos on my review!
Fruitvale Station is brilliant.
I used to drive by the exit regularly when I lived in the Bay Area.
I want to watch this so badly but I’m a bit of a scaredy cat. What’s the scare factor?

I just don’t like horror. Nonstop graphic violence and gore don’t do it for me… But I love a good story! Is it super gory?

Yay! I’m absolutely going to go see it. Thank you so much!
This makes me so happy! Let me know what you think of it. (Here's hoping I haven't steered you wrong!).
I’m sure not! I’ve been wanting to watch it. I’ll let you know!
Thanks, Rachelle and Nicole! I am going to see it too. I wouldn’t have without this conversation. 😊
Awesome, Virginia! Like I said to Nicole, please let me know what you thought of it after you see it. I'm hoping that I haven't steered you wrong!
I will!
I’m not a fan of horror at all! But this sounds great!
Glad I could make horror sound great! That's the best compliment!❤️ Thank you. Though the real credit goes to Ryan Coogler.
